Notifying the DVLA
-
- Class 3 Mobility Vehicles: If you are selling a Class-3 mobility vehicle registered with the DVLA, you are required to notify them. This will inform them that the registered keeper of the vehicle will be changing.
-
- Class-2 mobility vehicles: Do not need to be registered with the DVLA. If you are selling a Class 2 mobility scooter, you do not need to notify them.
Required Documentation
You will need a copy of the V5C logbook. You would have received this when you originally registered the mobility vehicle with the DVLA.
If the V5C logbook is lost or damaged the DVLA can provide a replacement.
-
- Online using the gov.uk website
-
- Manually by completing the Application for V5C (V62) form and posting to the DVLA.
How to complete the V5C form
The process for completing the V5C form to notify the DVLA of a change in registered keeper differs slightly for selling to a private buyer versus selling to a dealer (or retailer) – like us.
Selling to a private buyer
First the seller must complete Section 6 (New keeper slip) of the V5C log book and pass this to the buyer.
The seller must then complete Section 2 (Selling or transferring my vehicle to a new keeper) and post the V5C log book to the DVLA.
Selling to a Dealer
The first stage is for the seller to complete Section 4 (Selling, transferring or part-exchanging this vehicle to a motor dealer) of the V5C log book.
The seller must then cut out Section 4 and post this to the DVLA to notify then them that they will no longer be the registered keeper.
The dealer will take the remainder of the V5C log book away with them
When the dealer sells the mobility vehicle, they will complete Section 6 (New keeper slip) to pass to the new owner. The dealer then completes Section 2 (Selling or transferring my vehicle to a new keeper) before sending the logbook to the DVLA so it can be re-issued in the name of the new owner.
Conclusion
As you embark on selling your mobility scooter or powered wheelchair, remembering the importance of notifying the DVLA is crucial. This final step not only ensures legal compliance but also helps to ensure a smooth transition for the new owner. With this guide, you’re now equipped to handle the sale with confidence, ensuring all obligations are met and paving the way for the next user to enjoy their mobility vehicle.
